ABOUT JOE ZHAO

Joe Zhao is a photographer with a journalism background, and is currently a M.S. student majoring in Multimedia, Photography and Design at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications after graduating from Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts with a BFA degree in the Art Photography program in May 2024. She's been interested in visual arts since high school, and mainly focused on fashion photography when she came into college. As time went on, she found herself more enthusiastic about discovering the moments found in every day’s real life and shifted her focus to photojournalism. Joe currently works for The Daily Orange, an independent nonprofit newspaper published in Syracuse, New York, where she started as a photographer and worked her way up to assistant photo editor and video editor, where she collaborated with writers to curate visual content and ensure that it complements and enhances the storytelling of articles. Joe hopes to become a photojournalist after graduation, focusing primarily on social and political issues.
